Like much of Sarasota, John Ringling of circus fame was one of the first to develop real estate here. While he had a home on the mainland, it was on the island where Ringling built his retreat. Over the years, many celebrities have followed suit, including comedienne Lucille Ball and tennis star Martina Navratilova, both of whom found a haven on Bird Key.
Today homes on Bird Key are elite and luxurious. Lawns are manicured. Roads are wide. There is no commercial real estate permitted, and you won’t find any apartments or condos either. What you will find are neighbors sharing a meal, dogs enjoying the call of gulls overhead as they pull their owners along for a stroll, breathtaking sunsets, and canals that carve stunning paths through one of the region’s most desired neighborhoods.
Yachting is a passion for many Bird Key residents, and fittingly, there are two clubs to choose from: The Bird Key Yacht Club and the nearby Sarasota Yacht Club. Both are full - service private clubs with dining, social activities and, of course, marinas. In fact, more than two - thirds of the 511 lots developed in 1959 hover close to the water’s edge, and many include a yacht dock.
While there are no schools on Bird Key, children have easy access to a selection of private or public schools on the mainland.
If you decide to make Bird Key your home, you’ll have easy access to all the jewels that Sarasota has to offer. It takes only a few minutes to drive across the Ringling Causeway to the restaurants, shops and cultural attractions in Downtown Sarasota.You can also reach the famed beaches of Lido Key (link to Lido Key and St. Armands Community) and the bars and restaurants in St Armand’s Circle in no time.
